...getting closer all the time. Or so it appears from five floors up a tiny lift at Diva, a karaoke bar in central Osaka that seems little bigger than a shoebox. It's way past midnight following the orchestra's final concert, and the beer is flowing?as is Carbo's voice: "My, my, my, Delilah!" The reverb might be less than crystal-clear tonight, but that doesn't stop the high emotion from bouncing back. Yet even though the room is filled with musicians and an opera star, two gatecrashers steal the show. A platinum-haired English teacher...
Studies suggest that nighttime driving is particularly dangerous for teens, and curfews are urged. "Most accidents involving teens occur before midnight," says Susan Ferguson, senior vice president of research for the IIHS. "So the smartest laws go into effect earlier." But last year nine states introduced measures to rein in teens' nighttime driving privileges, and only one--Nevada--passed such a law. "A lot of adults think, I used to drive at night with my friends, so what's the harm?" says Judith Lee Stone, president of the nonpartisan Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety in Washington. "It's hard...
Nevada is one of the last states to join the decade-long movement to restrict teen drivers, but its law is now among the most comprehensive in the nation. It requires teen drivers to be off the road by 10 p.m., earlier than the midnight or 1 a.m. curfews in other states (six states still have no nighttime limits at all). Nevada also set a six-month waiting period between permit and licensing, mandates at least 50 hours of parent-supervised driving experience that must be tracked in a written log, and forbids newly licensed drivers to transport other youths...
...Seven months later, the same jet flew into Islamabad near midnight, and extracted three terror suspects. One was Binyan Mohammed, an Ethiopian student living in London, whom Pakistani security officials had arrested in Karachi. The CIA plane then flew the three men to Rabat, touching down at 3:40 a.m., while most people in the Moroccan capital were asleep; Mohammed has since been declared an enemy combatant and moved to Guantanamo, where he remains in legal limbo. Poring over the flight logs, Grey concluded it was 28th time CIA jets had touched down in Morocco since the 9/11 attacks. Last...
...Palestinians in Gaza have come to dread the phone ringing at midnight. Too often a stranger's voice, in flawless Arabic, will say, "I'm from the Israel Defense Forces. This is a warning. We're going to bomb your house in 15 minutes. Leave and tell your neighbors." Usually the Israeli intelligence is accurate--Gaza seethes with Palestinian informers--and the bombs, dropped by an F-16 fighter circling this narrow coastal strip on the Mediterranean, will destroy a hideout, weapons cache or hidden tunnel...
