...the 1890s, New York City was unrepentantly wide open. Day or night, a man with a thirst or a letch or the urge to gamble could satisfy his cravings with ease. Long past midnight, small bands played in dozens of Manhattan concert saloons while prostitutes in floor-length dresses trawled the tables. Streetwalkers divvied up the various corners in the Tenderloin, and touts handed out cards for $1-a-date Bowery brothels. Bettors wanting action could wander into Frank Farrell's crystal-chandeliered casino on West 33rd Street. Tourists could smoke opium in no-frills dens in Chinatown...

The first death was discovered shortly after midnight on Friday, the other two soon after. All three men left suicide notes written in Arabic. Harris said he believed the acts were coordinated, in part because of the similar method of the deaths and because in the past the three had gone on hunger strikes--acts of defiance that at times involved...

...January the prediction came true, as tuition rose to $1000 for next year. We congratulated Dean Bundy for his oracular powers, and suggested that perhaps tuition should have risen even higher—simultaneously, of course, with scholarship aid. We approved the extension of the Lamont Library hours to midnight. But we were sorry to see that the Student Council, which usually spends much of its time agreeing with the administration, thought that extension of Lamont hours was unnecessary—just one week before Librarian Buck announced the change. It seems the Council jumped on the wrong wave...
