...midocean one night last week the S. S. Bremen struck something huge and soft, quivered from stem to stern. Officers stopped the ship, peered out, saw nothing. They thought they had hit a sleeping whale...
...service across the South Atlantic would start Feb. 3. On that day a Luft Hansa flying boat is scheduled to take off from Stuttgart, Germany. She will roar south and west to Cadiz, the Canary Islands, West Africa, then shoot across the ocean to the seadrome Westphalen, riding in midocean (TIME, Nov. 20). ...airports across the Atlantic. The perfect publicity subject, it offered serious readers masses of data on construction of huge platforms, stabilized high above the waves by means of weighted pillars, on problems of anchorage, navigation, operation, economics. Even the windows of the drome's elegant hotel underlying the deck were pricked out with cozy lights...
Quite often the tube must be dropped 2,000 to 3,000 fathoms in order to reach the bottom. Because of the slow accumulation of sediment in midocean this tiny core of mud may represent thousands or even hundreds of thousands of years. Scientific interest lies in measuring the thickness of these stratifications of mud cores in order to determine former changes in depth and climate. Telegraph companies are particularly interested in this work, because they wish to learn how fast matter accumulates on the sea bottom in order to avoid laying cables in regions where the rate of deposition...
...each boat a radioman worked hour after hour, sent into the ether offers to Dr. Gunnar Horn, scientist aboard the Bratt-vaag, for "exclusives" on the story, pictures, diary. Each pleaded with him for a midocean rendezvous at a designated point in the Arctic. Each could only hope and pray that the message would be received, that the Brattvaag would be there, or that they would happen upon...
