...charges have damaged him so far (and in fact may have humanized the technocrat a bit). If he wins, Williams' biggest challenge will be to convince Washingtonians that he is mayor for all of them; in some parts of the city, his get-tough policies and conservative mien have given the impression that he's the white candidate. According to a recent Washington Post poll, he leads a large field, with 37% of Democrats overall; council member Kevin Chavous is second, with 20%. Among black Democrats, however, who are expected to make up more than two-thirds of those voting...

...calves to sprint down Broadway. The lumpy, rubberized-corduroy look has given way to the towering if scaly athleticism pioneered by H.R. Giger's mantid man-eaters in the Alien series. And while the snub-nosed, micro-eared Godzilla of the '60s and '70s had a vaguely mammalian mien--appropriate for a creature whose Japanese name, Gojira, is an amalgam of kujira (whale) and gorira (gorilla)--the fin-de-siecle Godzilla has a crocodilian brow, iguana affectations, a T. Rex crouch and a noble if dragonish chin instead of an avuncular Adam's apple. As for the radioactive breath, well...

...debacle got little attention at first, but after Mary did some interviews with a local paper last summer, her attractive face and quixotic mien changed that. Soon many images of Mary--some of her own creation, most drawn by others--were emerging. There was the weepy, repentant Mary at her original sentencing. "Help us. Help us all," she begged the judge. Moore believes this was "the real Mary," brought back to reality by Depakote, a mood stabilizer. Others suggest it was a ruse (successful) to win leniency...

...China, politics in Latin America--the big stories that are hard to miss. But he was the master of the small story, the kind we tend to miss. "I have resolutely pursued irrelevance out there on the back roads," he said. And so, with his warm baritone and neighborly mien, Kuralt traveled America to discover centenarian entertainers, whittlers, slingshot artists, brickmakers and an astonishing host of the overlooked, transforming them into roadside reminders in the media fast lane of a real world with real people in real time. Irrelevance, indeed...

Welcome to the sitcom from hell, redeemed into a lesson of togetherness. Marvin's Room, the 1991 Scott McPherson play, filmed by Jerry Zaks, is an old-fashioned weepie of noble mien with many bright moments and a superb cast. It's a tonic to see Keaton making sense of sanctity, DiCaprio refusing to sentimentalize a disturbed teenager. The impossible challenge goes to Streep; she's supposed to escort Lee on a forced march from belligerence into family harmony. "How can one sister be so good and the other so bad?" asks Aunt Ruth. The answer: careless writing. The movie...
