SYRIA lost 103 of its 200 MIG-21 jets in the October war, and 36 of its 80 MIG-17s. The U.S.S.R. has not only replaced all the downed planes with fast MIG-21s but given the Syrians 45 MIG-23 fighter-bombers, the Russian equivalents of the vaunted U.S. F-4 Phantoms. Chinese and Vietnamese naval ships exchanged fire for the next 48 hours. The Chinese flotilla was supported by MIG warplanes based on Hainan Island 200 miles to the north.
