...Taken as a whole, the rowing of the American four-oared crews could not compare with that of the English in finish, ease, and elegance, whatever it might do in brute strength, the class of competitors being so utterly dissimilar. No heed appears to be paid to coaching or to form, except in the College crews, - Yale, in particular, being a marked exception to the rule. This has been brought about by the captain of the College Boat-Club, who not very long ago paid a visit of some duration to England, and studied the rowing of the University crews...

...think that the tedious ceremonies of Commencement Day might well be divided. On one day the parts might be spoken; on another the degrees might be given out; while the graduates' dinner, etc., might take place on a third. The childish performances of Class Day - the dance about the tree and its companion follies - might well be abolished; and if the oration and poem were deemed worthy of perpetuation, they could be delivered either with the College parts, or on a separate occasion. Suppose, again, I continued, while a sense of perfect comfort pervaded my whole being, that I were at this moment a husband instead of a chum. I should then be under the necessity of turning immediately homeward, or a little family disturbance might arise. But as it is, - and I caught myself nodding to my glass, - it makes no difference if I don't go home...

...Club-races were not a success. The crews that entered did well, and the races might have been much worse; but for all that they cannot be called successful. Several men went to Canada who would have rowed had they been here; but we doubt if their presence even would have made the races what they should have been. It is unfortunate that the visit of the Foot-Ball Team took place at the time appointed for the Club-races, for the general principle must be recognized that to be successful in athletics in all the branches we give...
