Shubert Theatre at 8.15--"The Mikado". Reviewed today...
When one has been to a production such as the current one at the Shubert, it makes one wonder how the average musical comedy can be stomached. For right in the score of "The Mikado" there is tunefulness enough, fun enough for anyone. When these are nicely manicured and exhibited in the typical Winthrop Ames manner, they form an extremely rare sort of entertainment...
...Gilbert and Sullivan productions have been in Boston before, in fact they were here last spring when "Iolanthe" and "The Pirates of Penzance" were given, and at that time the enthusiasm was high enough. Now, "The Mikado" has been added and to us at any rate, it carries off the prize. Apparently some other people feel that way about it too, as it is being given all of this week and part of next whereas the other two are on but two days each...
...real evening's amusement particularly in this hectic time, there is nothing to be recommended before "The Mikado". Beautifully, staged and costumed, highly entertaining as to music and lyries. . . . well after all, what more do you want...
