Died. Wally Cox, 48, who made bespectacled, reedy-voiced timidity a profitable virtue as TV's Mr. Peepers; of an apparent heart attack; in Bel Air, Calif. After a short career as a nightclub comic and Broadway actor, Cox found stardom when his portrayal of the bungling, mild-mannered science teacher, Robinson Peepers, became a hit in 1952. After the show folded three years later, Cox was unable to shake his Milquetoast stereotype. His slow slide was only slightly interrupted by a short-lived TV situation comedy, minor movie roles, commercials and a stint as a game-show panelist...

...that's brought off successfully without a soaring guitar solo. Listen closely: there are several themes, subtle changes in tempo that sustain interest that to begin with was merely hypnotic. The song changes tempo, only slightly, something like six times in the first four minutes. It opens pastorally with mild flute in the introduction, and then evolves through each theme, culminating in a beautifully double-tracked accusation, "Many a thief can be seen in quiet places, fields of green...But the only thing that remains is to roll right stones...

University democracy is an alluring proposition. Harvard would never permit it altogether; but what is most baffling is the Faculty's near-complete rejection of the idea. Sad to say, its patronizing rejection last week of mild revisions to the CRR was typical. As the Faculty prepared to pass over all but one structural amendment proposed by William Paul, a colleague noted, "[he] deserves our gratitude for this chore of preventive maintenance." It is reassuring at least to know that preventive maintenance is now a Faculty concern...
