Under ideal weather conditions the University oarsmen jumped into a lead of several yards at the start, and when a third of a mile had been covered, they led by more than half a length, pulling a stroke of 35, while Annapolis was working at 40 strokes to the minute. When the course was half covered Harvard had raised the stroke to 36 and there was open water between the shells.
