Beckford stayed on the shoulder of Villanova's Bridig Leddy until the last lap of the mile run, when she burst ahead to win in 4:32.3, a new national collegiate indoor record. Beckford also came through for the Crimson in her anchor leg of the two-mile relay. Although Villanova broke the tape to win the race in 8:49.8, the Harvard quartet stroke to second in its best time of the season, 8:59.5. Private cars were banned within a 15-mile radius of Lake Placid, and an elaborate bus system was devised to shuttle some 25,000 spectators per day to outlying parking areas. It did not work.
