...Although Stanford enters today's competition still a heavy favorite to carry off championship honors, the most surprising upset of the first day occurred to one of the Californians best runners. Emerson Spencer, generally picked to depose Cecil Cooke, giant Syracuse negro, from his place as the premier quarter miler in college ranks, was forced out of the meet by falling to take better than a fourth in his qualifying heat in the 440, a heat which was won by Swope of Dartmouth in 49 7-10 seconds...
Coach Robertson also announced at the conclusion of this afternoon's work-out that J. O. MacDonald, sprinter and quarter miler, will be entered only in the 220. Last year MacDonald, who was a member of the 1924 Olympic team, competed only in the 440 on the Harvard Stadium cinders, but has been showing more power in the shorter event this year. Penn's other hope in the 220 is Warren Tuxill, a Sophomore, who has shown rapid progress in successive starts this spring. He enters the meet this week still untried in big competition and may provide a surprise...
Captain McCall, who has been suffering from a slight injury, will probably be able to run. He is expected to face the starter in the 440 yard run with Home and Swope, the speedy Green quarter miler. The Dartmouth aggregation is stronger this season than last and counts on victories in the hurdles, high jump 880 yard run, and the javelin. Wells, holder of the indoor intercollegiate hurdling championship, is expected to lead the timber toppers in both the high and low hurdling events.
