Reporting in the July 10 edition of the journal Nature, researchers used a high-tech equivalent of a stereo speaker lowered into a bore hole near Parkfield, Calif., a half-mile deep and five yards from a measuring device. For two months beginning in late 2005, researchers transmitted pulse signals three times per second, from the speaker to the measuring device, calculating travel time between the two stations. Surprised scientists learned the seismic waves slowed dramatically on only two occasions: two hours prior to a magnitude-1 temblor, and a startling 10 hours before a magnitude-3 quake...
...Kutner imagines, such as a robot uprising or an unleashed super-plague - global warming will be an apocalypse of our own making. End times stories are tales of sin punished, and climate change is no different. It's just bigger - we're all digging our own graves, with every mile driven and every last bit of air conditioning...
Please Pass the Cockroaches Re "Eating bugs": how about advocating for a more palatable vegetarian national future [June 16]? I've been a vegetarian for 37 years. I'm 61, 6 ft. 2 in., 185 lb. and healthy enough to compete in 100-mile mountain-bike races, ski, climb and dance all night with my wife. I've been living extremely well on rice and beans for protein, tofu, tempeh, fruits, greens, grains and 40 g of fiber daily. Meat and dairy products cause more obesity, heart disease and other ill-health consequences. Eat vegetarian for yourself and the planet...
...Russia continues to shrink by more than half a million people a year, fools appear to multiply as profusely as ever. Perhaps that's why whenever national elections are held, the polling station nearest my dacha (country house) is the local loony bin. As for the roads, each 40-mile drive here from Moscow confirms my suspicion that roads were in much better shape in Gogol's time. Today, they look as if World War II just ended, but not before a couple of Messerschmitts managed to sneak in a final strafing run earlier in the day. There...
...Recently, we called an ambulance from the nearest township when my mother-in-law came down with a bad case of strangulated hernia. I walked half a mile through a heavy rain to the main road to meet the medics, lest they lose their way in our forest - which happened the last time we called for urgent medical help. They do carry cell phones, but can't afford the cost of using them. An hour after I got to the main road first, we finally connected. The medical orderly was friendly and unflustered. Having examined the patient, she advised hospitalization...
