Though not identified in the Post story, the Lebanese unit involved was widely presumed to be the Deuxieme Bureau, the intelligence branch of the Lebanese Army. The unit is dominated by Maronite Christians with close ties to the 6,000-member Christian militia called the Lebanese Forces. Intelligence sources in Washington speculate that agents of the Deuxieme Bureau, possibly acting on their own, hired outsiders to carry out the car bombing. The Lebanese Army high command flatly denied any official involvement in the attack. As for the CIA , it insisted that it had not trained the agents involved...
Syrian determination to impose a settlement of the continuing civil war in Lebanon was also in evidence last week. Under intense pressure from Damascus, the Lebanese Forces, a 6,000-strong Christian militia, replaced its commander, Samir Geagea, with Elias Hobeika. Geagea had instigated a revolt last March against President Amin Gemayel, accusing him of doing Syria's bidding. Geagea's downfall was marked by intense fighting in Beirut along the "green line" dividing the Christian and the predominantly Muslim sectors. Hobeika is the man who led the Phalangists into the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps south of Beirut...
...Chuck finished him [a Druze militia man] with the classic knife attack. He grabbed the man's collar and twisted hard, dragging him downward, choking, with his throat exposed. The movement almost drags the throat onto the knife, and Chuck cut both the artery and the windpipe in a single...
...have not hesitated to intimidate their neighbors. Washington sometimes inflates the menace posed by Nicaragua's Soviet-aided military buildup; Reagan was simply wrong when he declared in 1983 that Managua's armed forces exceed those of all other Central American countries combined. But, counting full-time soldiers and militia on active duty, the Nicaraguan army of 62,000 is by far the largest of any single country in the area. Nicaragua has 150 tanks; Guatemala has ten and the other Central American nations none at all. Though the Sandinistas are deficient in combat aircraft, they boast 36 helicopters, including...
Geagea is reported to have won the backing of Solange Gemayel, Bashir's widow. One of his chief allies is another militia commander, Elias Hobeika, who led the Phalangist forces into the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in September 1982, where they murdered an estimated 700 to 800 Palestinian and Lebanese civilians. The following year, Geagea helped direct the Christian assault on Druze villages in the mountains. The Druze fought off the Christian forces, and on one occasion Geagea had to be rescued by an Israeli helicopter...
