...this country a reserve of 600,000 men is necessary to keep us adequately prepared for war. This reserve could be supplied by means of compulsory service and a more perfectly organized and salaried militia. At present we can mobilize at most 105,000 efficient men. A war, coming suddenly, as wars do today, would find us helpless. Moreover our growing power and possessions require a large army, not only for protection against war, but also as a preventative of war. For the surest way to discourage other nations from entering war is to be prepared to meet them...

...another column a communication concerning make-up mid-year examinations. We emphasized need of permanent reform in this direction some time ago. The communication this morning mentions the innovation, which was introduced for the benefit of those men who were absent from their mid-year examinations because of militia duty in Lawrence during the strike and who were, therefore, allowed to take their make-up examinations in April. In our previous editorial we pointed out the desirability of making this a permanent feature, and we hope with the writer of this morning's communication that the office will adopt permanently...

...second objection is that the makeup examinations conflict with the regular examinations in June. Men who have to take both do well in neither. Those who were at Lawrence with the militia during the last mid-years have been permitted to take examinations during the latter part of April. It is, indeed, a very good suggestion that a regular make-up examination period be instituted to come just before or after the spring vacation...

...Office, however, has offered a possible remedy for this unsatisfactory arrangement. Those students who were called away to Lawrence for militia duty in the mid-year period were absent from their examinations. In order not to overburden these men with an unbearable amount f work in June, the Office has decided to allow them to take their make-up papers in the latter part of April. This, we believe, is a system of make-ups that might well be permanently adopted...
