...signed. Gus Swebilius and his associates took a lot in Hamden, where the fire-ruined walls of a building stood. While a new 15-acre plant was abuilding, they scoured New England for old machine tools, cleaned up and in some cases rebuilt them in an old silk mill, rounded up skilled gunsmiths who had worked with Gus Swebilius during World War I. If they had waited for hard-to-get new tools, they would never have turned out their first guns last week...
Last week, for three days, a small force of Australians, New Zealanders and Britons dug themselves in on the heights above the pass's little mill and aqueduct, near its hot springs, and poured down fire so that the Germans could neither scale the heights nor move along the narrow strip of shore. His plans include blast furnaces in Utah for Rocky Mountain coal and ore; electric furnaces near Bonneville Dam to use cheap Government power to convert the Utah pig and scrap iron into high-grade steel; a plant in Southern California to use electricity and natural gas (first time on a commercial scale) to smelt local ore; a plate...
...planes and guns and men we need until the raucous voice of America-the voice of Walt Whitman and The Rail Splitter, of George Washington and the gentle Lee, the voice of the blue-jeaned, 'baccy-chewing field hand, the voice of the East Side and the steel mill-the hoarse, harsh voice of America whistles down the winds of the world and is heard in the far corners of the earth. This...
