...average nuclear reactor produces 400 to 500 pounds of plutonium a year. One pound, distributed evenly through the atmosphere, is enough to give every person on earth lung cancer for so goes the estimate of Dr. Helen Caldicott, author of Nuclear Madness and an anti-nuclear activist). One-millionth of a gram of plutonium constitutes a carcinogen dose. That's just one of the dangers when reactors operate "safely." Since at Three Mile Island, the public has learned that far more dangerous accidents will happen, and the anti-nuclear movement has been swelling...

Scientists are also conducting ever more sensitive tests of Einstein's theory. M.I.T.'s Shapiro and his colleagues have been sending radio signals past the rim of the sun, bouncing them off other planets and clocking their return to earth to an accuracy of better than a millionth of a second. The object: to see if solar gravity slows the signals down by the amount forecast by Einstein. So far, general relativity has passed these and other tests without exception. Says Yale Physicist Feza Gursey: "Einstein's theories tend to become stronger with time...

Last June, after four years of patient observing, the researchers finally made the crucial measurement. They employed a new, extremely sensitive computerized clocking device capable of detecting orbital timing changes of only one fifty-millionth of a second. This superaccurate timer revealed that in those four years the orbital period of the objects had decreased a total of four ten-thousandths of a second. That was exactly on the Einsteinian mark. Said Taylor: "We don't claim to have detected gravitational waves themselves, but simply proved they exist...

...that only minute quantities have been available for testing. Most interferon, including the supply that will be used in the new tests, comes from Finland, where it is extracted at great expense from white blood cells collected from Red Cross blood donors. As a result, as little as a millionth of an ounce of pure interferon costs close...

...that the cloud and the droplets that fell from it onto homes, gardens and livestock were composed of trichlorophenol, an irritating but nonfatal chemical. But the overheating reactor sent the temperature of the TCP soaring above 200° C. Dioxin was formed-a substance so lethal that one hundred-millionth of a gram in a two-pound mixture would kill half the rabbits who might...
