...order to cut costs, Stratford grows its own feeds, which are fertilized by manure from its own cattle. A division of the company enriches waste rice hulls with nitrogen for feed. To speed up digestion of grain in a cow's four stomach cavities, Stratford converts corn and milo into flakes. All these cost-shaving techniques mean that Stratford can fatten cattle at 30 to 40 per pound below the national average. The chicken branch, centered near Tenaha, Texas, and the floriculture operation, in Apopka, Fla., produce along comparably canny lines...
...features, as anyone who's seen the film or the original play will tell you, are the surprising deceptions which reveal themselves every half-hour or so. Andrew Wyke, an English mystery writer (Sir Laurence Olivier), is at his Gothic estate when his wife's lover, a hairdresser named Milo Tindle (Michael Caine), arrives. Wyke proposes a shrewd plot: he will help Tindle "steal" the Wyke jewels, in order to defraud the insurance company. But that, we find, is not quite Wyke's real goal. ...sounded almost as if Milo Minderbinder, the entrepreneurial mess officer who honored all contracts American and German, had stepped incarnate from the pages of Catch-22. On an overcast day last week, five U.S. fighter-bombers, using "precision" electronic bombing gear, went astray and swept over the U.S. airbase at Danang, South Viet Nam. They promptly deposited 34 500-lb. bombs on the sprawling installation. Only a "few" of the bombs landed on a fuel supply area, the military said; the rest fell harmlessly in open country. Those few, however, were enough to injure ten Americans and one Vietnamese...
...Minneapolis Programmer Milo Arthur Bennett, whose firm handled computer work for the National City Bank of Minneapolis, programmed the computer in 1966 to ignore an overdraft in his own account at the bank. He was caught and prosecuted in four months-but only because the computer broke down and the bank's accounts were checked manually...
...Wyke (Laurence Olivier) is a wealthy member of the English gentry. He is also the author of a dozen novels about the aristocratic investigator St. John Lord Merridew and an obsessive games player whose home looks like a cross between Pollock's Toy Museum and a penny arcade. Milo Tindle (Michael Caine), a London hairdresser whose parents were Italian and-worse yet-Jewish, is the lover of Wyke's estranged wife. He comes by Wyke's stately home one afternoon to discuss a divorce. Wyke instead presses him into an intricate plot to defraud an insurance company...
