...Cambridge Election Commission is composed of four commissioners. Two, Andrew T. Trodden and Francis Burns, are appointed by the Democratic ward chiefs, and two others, Constance Milton and Edward J. Samp Jr., by the Republican equivalent. It is somewhat difficult to understand how a commission with no direct authority from City Hall itself is entitled to determine who is to be enfranchised and who is not, but that has been precisely the case...

Though many institutions dangle some of the same lures as Coolidge, few provide as many attractions simultaneously. Coolidge jolted the Boston banking community several years ago by dropping charges and minimum deposit requirements for checking accounts, a move that brought in 25,000 new accounts. Says President Milton Adess, a former hardware merchant who led in the bank's founding: "We're using our customers' money, so why should we charge them for it?" Coolidge was also the first in the Boston region to pay interest (4%) on Christmas club accounts. The bank stays open Saturday mornings...

...view that man is more naturally kin to Cain than Abel. Yet it is closer to a more entertaining tradition-the literary monster made real because he has been made so human. Variously and happily, Grendel suggests Caliban, grumping around Prospero's island like the first exploited colonial, Milton's Lucifer, that voluble, self-righteous rebel simmering eternally on a lake of fire, even King Kong on the Empire State Building, bemusedly plucking at those 30-cal. holes in his furry chest...

...birth of unwanted children. According to one major survey, at least one American child in five is unwanted. The obvious solution -making both contraceptives and abortion cheaper and more available-would reduce the birth rate to below the magic 2.1. The principal question-raised anew last month by Milton Eisenhower and ex-Senator Joseph Tydings, founders of the Coalition for a National Population Policy-is whether Americans can be persuaded to want fewer children. A recent Gallup poll showed that the trend is in that direction: the percentage favoring large families (four or more children) has dropped from...

Eight-Dog Night. On a Manhattan side street, Ronnie Milton, 21, is sprucing up his VW bus with curtains, carpeting and wallpaper in preparation for a trip to California with his girl friend. Some vans are fitted with primitive sinks and iceboxes; the 1969 Ford van owned by Ann Wasserman, 20, has a large table that used to be a tree stump. Ann's van also carries a cooler, a Coleman stove and lantern, and her boyfriend's motorcycle, which he rides ahead of the van on long trips. Other vans have kerosene lanterns, candles mounted on inner...
