...Piazza (M-G-M), developed from a popular novella by Elizabeth Spencer, is an intelligent and charming "woman's picture" that tells the story of a rich American couple (Olivia de Havilland and Barry Sullivan) with an emotionally harrowing problem: they have a mentally defective daughter (Yvette Mimieux). Kicked by a pony in childhood, the girl has the mind of a ten-year-old girl in the body of a startlingly beautiful young woman. In fact, the girl's sensuous attractions are so spectacular that most young men thoughtlessly fail to notice her mental limitations...
...this picture: Should a Girl Scout trade her merit badge for a wedding ring, for a fraternity pin, or just for the hell of it? Two of the girls (Dolores Hart, Paula Prentiss) play it safe, and though they miss their fun they get their men. The third (Yvette Mimieux) plays "backseat bingo" and in the last reel finds herself all smashed up by an automobile. Not very subtle, but it squares the censor...
...cavern-dwelling green mutants who breed the Eloi as beef cattle. (Why science fiction's monsters never breed cattle as cattle is perplexing, but perhaps they dislike the taste.) Actor Taylor, of course, does mighty battle to save the Eloi, particularly a charming little cutlet named Weena (Yvette Mimieux), then chugs off to 1900 in time for dinner. Later that night he heads back to 802,701 taking with him three books to re-educate the Eloi. The film ends with an appropriately Wellsian riddle: Which three books...
