...future is still intact, still unredeemed, but the past is irredeemable" from the story "Orion" means. Are our futures really that predetermined? And of course "the past is irredeemable"--It's already happened; it's gone. It's tautologies like that that make me lash out in my mind at Winterson and scream: "Just get on with your bloody beautiful tale!" These moments jolt readers back into their reality, into an annoying self-consciousness. Consider this silly offering from an otherwise tantalizing "Atlantic Crossing:" "God knows, we need what footholds we can find on the glass mountain of our existence...

...music of the tango brings to mind forgotten memories of the past, the haunting of the soul. It whispers seduction amidst shadowy figures in a dim and smoky room. Tango acknowledges and effectively uses these images, but it also creates a stylized, occasionally surrealistic atmosphere that carries the tango beyond its conventional setting. This highly theatrical effect is achieved by the creative talent of Italian cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, three-time Oscar winner for best photography in films such as The Last Emperor. In a word, it was loud...

...this mind-numbing noise a result of a boy's attempt at overcompensation for lack of talent? Not exactly. There's no denying the appeal of a phenom who can do no wrong. We all get caught up in the fervor of manufactured girl/boy toys like New Kids on the Block or the Spice Girls, but it would be a shame for Lang to be boxed into that category. He seems to be the real deal, what with his gravely beyond-his-years voice which emotes the sagacity of a down-and-out alcoholic who has been beaten down...

...Bear in mind that people with eating disorders yearn to know that someone could both know the worst about them and love them and care about them anyway. Remember that human company and empathy matter and that hurt and pain are often more bearable in the company of another human being...
