Lottery Ticket. Until the very moment of his fall, Nikita Khrushchev was noted for similarly compelling powers of persuasion-and political survival. The son of a peasant farmer in the Ukraine, he worked as a shepherd, steam fitter and coal miner. In 1918 he joined the Red Army, quickly becoming a political commissar. As a delegate to the 14th Party Congress in 1925, he skipped breakfast every morning so he could get a front seat near Stalin...

...Fort Peck, Mont., graced the very first cover of LIFE in 1936. In a 40-year career with Time Inc. that started when she was hired as FORTUNE'S first photographer in 1929, Margaret Bourke-White pursued patterns everywhere, from sweat droplets on a South African miner's face more than a mile underground to the look of New York from a precarious perch atop a gargoyle on the Chrysler Building, 800 ft. above the street. The son of an impoverished Saar miner who was also a dedicated Communist, young Honecker was handing out political pamphlets at eight and was a full-fledged party member at 18. Two years after the Nazis came to power in 1933, he was arrested and later sentenced to ten years in prison for preparing to commit high treason...

...Figaro is good solid Mozart, respectable but not too difficult for a good orchestra. John Miner, the conductor, rehearsed his orchestra well, and put together a tight performance. Miner is an enthusiastic conductor whose beats are impossible to follow as his arms go flailing through the air (in one particularly violent tutti, his cufflink flew off and hit me on an upbeat). He has the orchestra and continuo well under control, and the singers cued in well...
