Starting from a base in California, the graze craze is spreading across the country. Inspired by tapas, Middle Eastern mezes and East Asian small dishes, chefs are offering diners a greater variety of flavors on a multitude of mini-dishes, usually for less money than traditional-size portions and without a load of calories. Several cookbooks have recently been published that focus on the trend, including Meze: Small Plates to Savor and Share from the Mediterranean Kitchen (Morrow) by Diane Kochilas. The extravagant multi-tiered creations of the NASDAQ-fueled '90s have faded. Now the emphasis is on taste, according...
DIED. WALTER ZAPP, 97, inventor of the Minox mini-camera, a device tiny enough to be hidden in a closed hand; in Binningen, Switzerland. Though the camera he created in 1936 became a popular gadget in James Bond movies and other spy films, Zapp's invention was inspired not by anything so intriguing as espionage but by having once worked as an art photographer's apprentice, which required him to lug around heavy wooden cameras...
When most people look at VERNE TROYER, they see Mini-Me, the tiny evil clone from the Austin Powers films. When GENEVIEVE GALLEN looks at him, she sees 32 smoldering inches of future husband. At 6 ft. 2 in., Gallen might seem an unlikely match for Troyer, 34, but he and the yoga instructor, 29, have been dating for a year and will marry in November. (As Austin Powers might say, the mechanics of it are just mind boggling.) If anyone's looking for a wedding present, we suggest a stepladder...
...there's plenty of it. The picture, directed and co-written by Gregor Jordan from Robert O'Connor's novel, plays like a mini-series compacted into 95 minutes. It develops a severe case of character sprawl: a clueless colonel (Ed Harris) and a hard-nosed top sergeant (Scott Glenn) and their respective women (Elizabeth McGovern, Anna Paquin)--both of whom cozy up to Elwood--plus lots of troublesome MPs and outsiders who stand in Elwood's way as he plans the big score. What's worth savoring is Phoenix's performance, cool and alert, confiding only in the camera...
...sidewalk in style, powered by an electric motor attached to this year's models. Targeted at youngsters ages 6 to 11 and capable of going as fast as 10 m.p.h., these revved-up rollers will leave foot-powered versions in the dust. There's even a new Electric Punk mini-bike, at right, in the family. Each model runs for approximately 30 min. between charges--which take about 6 hours--and has a surprisingly quiet motor. Just make sure the kids wear a helmet, since these zippy roadsters (from $119 to $179) may tempt them to try more daring feats...
