...image just two weeks before the Republican National Convention comes to town. Timoney told TIME that while the video "does not look good--in fact it looks awful," the public should withhold judgment until investigations are done. "What you're seeing is the last 28 sec. of a 20-min. car chase during which a police officer was shot." For now, 12 officers have been placed on administrative duty, eight who were involved in the gunplay and four who were seen kicking Jones. The Justice Department has commenced its own review. Congressional Black Caucus leaders have called the incident another...

Armstrong's uphill surge was perhaps the most dominating move in the 97-year history of the race. As if the 4-min. lead he had gained over his nearest rivals wasn't devastating enough, he destroyed their psyches by smoothly accelerating in the saddle while they stood above their seats and pumped. And that was while each was fronted by a teammate to break the wind. "I had the impression I was watching someone descending a hill I was trying to scale," said French rider Stephane Heulot...

Spiesel's achievement is of Velcro-on-snowsuits magnitude. Think of a mother executing nits one by one as she combs out her second-grader's hair. She knows she's in for a 45-min. search-and-destroy mission. She's irritated by the knowledge that she's bound to miss a few of the tiny things and will have to go through the entire process again in a couple of days. Now think of the second-grader's hair washed in Dr. Spiesel's shampoo, which was developed in response to a head-lice epidemic...

...latest wrinkle in new media has an old name: radio. Scifi.com's Seeing Ear Theatre is offering original audio programs, including this 13-episode series by s-f scribe J. Michael Straczynski. The opening 32-min. story has little suspense, since its title (The Damned Are Playing at Godzilla's Tonight) is also its punch line. Steve Buscemi gives the lead character--a racist rock-club owner--his familiar sleazy-loser clamminess. But City of Dreams will have to improve to hold even a flickering candle to old cathode-tube chillers like Suspense and Lights Out. We miss the creaky...

...min., Time Regained has its slow spots, especially during the war years, when the prime social occasions are the funerals of those lost in either war or melancholy. Even then, there are beguilements aplenty in the work of some of France's ageless actress-beauties: Beart, Catherine Deneuve, Arielle Dombasle, Edith Scob, Marie-France Pisier. In their smart frocks and pretty predicaments, they make Proust seem a fashion that could never go out of style. This is a serious filmgoer's treat: intelligence cloaked in elegance...
