...younger generation has escaped from under the very eyes of the government, which didn't even see them going. The party's authority no longer crosses the generation gap, and a huge empty space has opened up in society for youngsters to prosper--or self-destruct. A 15-min. cell-phone call in Saigon costs the same as a single hit of heroin in one of the city's public parks...
...users rate the music and post reviews. Last week one of the showcased acts was a San Francisco-based country group called the Court and Spark (a user named Rodco called the band "supercool mood country"). Using a 56K modem, it took a mind-numbing 2 hr. 20 min. to download the band's track Sugar Pie in Bed (this critic was able to have a buffet lunch, shop at Barnes & Noble and listen to the new Papa Roach CD in the interim). Still, the track, with its gently curmudgeonly vocals and drowsy guitar, was worth the hassle. Well, maybe...
...Veterans of Foreign Wars in Pittsburgh, Pa., attended a dinner at 6:30 p.m. in East Brunswick, N.J., and called it a night at 8:20. The next day began with a 7 a.m. breakfast, an hourlong visit to a child-care center at 10 a.m. and a 20-min. lunch speech to the Conservative Party in Manhattan, after which he took off for home at 3 p.m. Let the weekend begin...

Also, there were her remarkable skills as a broadcaster; her combustible chemistry with Philbin; their show's unscripted, unpredictable first 20 min.; and the sometimes palpable tension between her and Michael Gelman, executive producer of Live with Regis and Kathie Lee. This week Gifford, 46, leaves it all behind. Who will replace her? It hasn't been decided. The more pressing question is, Why is she leaving? And what will America...
Rocky coastlines are not that interesting. Nor are beaches: you just wind up staring at the ocean. Forests are nothing but trees. Deserts are beautiful for about 15 min., but they're always out in the middle of nowhere. As for mountains, an occasional range is nice, but mountains tend to cluster and become a continuous piece of bad art, a painting you'd see at an estate sale and not buy. And mountain people are a pain. Vermonters, for example, tend to be very sniffy about who is worthy to set foot in their midst and use their toilet...
