...play and play and play. And it will have to for both studios to get their money back. It's not an impossible mission. Paramount's Mission: Impossible grossed $422 million worldwide. Sony's Men in Black grossed $527 million. Despite Titanic's marathon running time (3 hrs. 14 min.), most industry observers think it has a chance. Paramount, with its cap, should see a profit while Fox is still praying to break even. Mechanic is resigned. "They have a better deal than we do," he says. "That's life...
...even the animal fringe has a fringe. Take--with as many grains of salt as you wish--the animal communicators. Like modern-day Dr. Dolittles, these visionaries have long talks with animal companions, often over the telephone, to plumb the depths of their presumably troubled psyches. A 30-min. consultation might reveal that an aging horse is worried about being sent to the glue factory or that a dog feels overburdened by having to bear all his master's secrets in silence. Boogie Nights, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is itself a size freak; the movie is in love with bigness. SIHL's chairman, Cai Lai Xing, 55, an economist, helped prepare Shanghai's economic blueprint for the 21st century, and managing director Zhuo Fu Min, 45, was involved in reforming the city's state-owned enterprises. Zhuo nonetheless downplays political connections as the key to the company's success. Says he: "SIHL makes investments based purely on business...
...issue in the grand jury hearing was whether the Marines had followed the rules of engagement after they were shot at by Hernandez. Apparently they stalked Hernandez for 20 min. after those shots, keeping in close radio contact with their unit. It was only when Hernandez raised his rifle again and pointed it at Lance Corporal James Blood that team leader Banuelos fired. The Marines said they were devastated by the killing, which they insisted was an accident. "If there was any way to fix it, I would," said Blood. The grand jury evidently believed them, deciding that Banuelos...
