Boby Clark is a last remnant of the American entertainment idiom characterized by the minstrel show, the burlesque and the one-two-three kick. Clark and his walking stick continue in the manner of Weber and Fields and other footlight pranksters: a little man who speaks softly and brings down the house. Viewed apart from Clark and the situation comedy he provokes, "Sweethearts" is not worth the few tunes that motivate its singers. All too often the usual operetta tomfoolery involving disguised counts and misplaced husbands is a little hard to stomach. Clark, however, patches things up nicely by injecting...
...Devil's Envoys (Paulvé; Superfilm), which is based on the medieval romance Les Visiteurs du Soir, is a French film about a minstrel (Alain Cuny) and his mistress (Arletty) who travels disguised as his brother. One evening they turn up among the entertainers at a small French chateau. These unusually talented musicians are capable of magic, as well as music; they are emissaries of the Devil (Jules Berry). Their business in the world is to seduce immortal souls through the transient flesh...
...minstrel goes to work on the baron's lovely daughter and becomes entangled in his own toils. His "brother," sticking more faithfully to duty, reveals her sex both to the devout Baron (Ledoux) and to his worldly prospective son-in-law. When the plot gets too complicated, the Devil himself turns up, disguised as a very nasty gentleman, and complicates matters still further. Arletty's lovers are certified for Hell; but Hell's unfaithful minstrel and his sweetheart, thanks to the white magic of True Love, fight the Devil to a draw...

Later, in the U.S., he met and molded for bronze the late Mrs. Payne Whitney's Twenty Grand, George Widener's Eight Thirty, Jock Whitney's Royal Minstrel, Marshall Field's Stimulus, Sir Galahad Third ("You wouldn't turn around to look at Galahad, but I must confess he had nice manners"), stablefuls more. His next job: an equestrian statue for the grave of Field Marshal Sir John Dill in Arlington Cemetery...
...prove that they had harbored no such intentions, all 15 jockeys left the post hustling. Gordon Richards' jinx, which has kept him from winning England's greatest race in 22 attempts, was with him again. Tudor Minstrel showed briefly in front at Tattenham Corner, flattened out badly, finished fourth, out of the prize money. The winner: French-owned Pearl Diver, a 40-to-1 shot...
