Each morning the New York Herald Tribune (circ. 350,966) rolls off its Manhattan presses in a grueling fourth-place struggle against its competitors-the Daily News (circ. 2,025,229), the Mirror (836,810) and the Times (673,974). An ocean away in Paris, home of the Trib's Continental alter ego, the picture is far different. Last week, following a pattern of years, the European edition of the Herald Tribune splashed prosperously across 45 countries, in each of which it enjoys something close to dominance. When an upset stomach forced an obviously tired Queen Elizabeth to take a couple of days off from her Canadian tour, London's Daily Herald cried out in alarm: THE QUEEN IS EXHAUSTED BRING HER HOME! "The truth is Her Majesty has the colly-wobbles," said the Daily Mirror. Two magnetometers watch the earth's magnetic field, may help map the field and explain its curious storms and their effect on earth communications...

Your July 13 cover story on Soviet First Deputy Premier Frol Kozlov's official visit to this country seems excessively cynical, sarcastic and vindictive-like the reaction of the fairy-tale witch whose mirror of truth began telling her that she was no longer the fairest in the land. It will do us no good to lie to ourselves. The Russians are gaining on us in all fields and will continue to do so, regardless of TIME'S neurotic reactions...

...lately taken to conning scientific journals and newsmagazines for topics ("I've become positively immoral about tearing pages out of magazines on airplanes"). Spilhaus and his artist, Carl Rose, dish out lightly sugared fare about the ionosphere and how it is used as a global "radio mirror," about the winds and how they flow round the earth, about harvesting fish with electric currents...
