...more discordant note are Vikram Savkar as King Kaiser and Tim Ford as Alan Swann. Savkar sings fine and tries hard but he is simply miscast. Kaiser is supposed to be an egomaniac television star who terrorizes everyone--Savkar seems more like the nice kid next door with a paper route. Ford's performance is more problematic. His voice is negligible and his acting isn't much better. This sort of one-note performance would be less noticeable in a minor character but in someone who is supposed to carry as much presence and pizzazz as Swann...
...Ostensibly this one is about Jack (Gary Oldman), a rogue cop with a nice wife (Annabella Sciorra), an eager mistress (Juliette Lewis) and a profitable sideline in helping the Mafia locate apostates who think they've found safety in the witness- protection program. But the Mafia don (a wildly miscast Roy Scheider) has given Jack a sort of promotion: he's entrusted with actually putting the hit on Mona, who, naturally, deploys all her sexual cunning to evade her fate...
Both LuPone and her London paramour Kevin Anderson seemed miscast. In fairness, LuPone would fare much better in the Los Angeles version. She is a skilled comic actress with an innate instinct for emotional excess. But in an ongoing dispute over who will play the role on Broadway, Close has three big advantages. She is physically much more plausible as a legendarily beautiful face. She approaches the role as a dramatic experience rather than as scenes leading up to show-stopper songs. Most important, she uncorks an almost slapstick comic inventiveness...
...plot pivots on the character of Mrs. Romaine Vole, Leonard's wife. The talented Francesca Delbanco, somewhat miscast as the elusive and always mysterious German wife, is successful in giving the play its much needed jolts. Her scenes add both interest and dimension to this colorless play. Believable as the jilted lover, Delbanco is also able to take a cheesy De Palmaesque ending and give it legitimacy and seriousness...
...about which even Randall, who directed, can't find anything good to say; in the much improved second season, an intelligent, revisionist reading of The Seagull, a solid (and Tony-nominated) Saint Joan and the George Abbott comedy Three Men on a Horse, with Randall supremely skillful if utterly miscast as a husband...
