Some Senators wondered aloud what Packwood was hiding from them. The committee wants to see not just the portions dealing with the alleged sexual misconduct, but all of it, everything from what he did on January 23, 1982 to what he really thought of one of his summer interns. Many supporters of the resolution contend that a public figure loses his right to privacy when entering public office. The committee itself bases its claims on the fact that Packwood already used parts of his diaries to defend himself earlier, thereby relinquishing any claims to privacy...

...Senator Robert Packwood's private journal. "Are there personal things in there?" Packwood lamented last week. "Sure. Family heartaches. Disappointments. Irritation with the car repairman." There was more than that: word emerged from the committee that the diaries, which of course range far beyond the scope of the sexual-misconduct charges he faces, may in fact contain evidence of unrelated criminal violations. If he fails to resign, the ethics committee may decide to push forward shortly with open hearings on the sexual-harassment charges...

...Packwood is not satisfied with the outcome, he threatens an appeal that "could take years." If he runs out the appeals process and still refuses to comply, Packwood could face civil contempt penalties. Meanwhile, he creates an opportunity for the committee to delve further into the possibility of criminal misconduct. Packwood's unfortunate pattern is that each attempt he makes to preserve his privacy seems to turn up the wattage of scrutiny even further...

...vote, Senators supported the ethics committee's effort to subpoena 8,400 pages of diaries as part of a sexual-misconduct investigation of Bob Packwood, the Oregon Republican. The five-term Senator refused to hand over the diaries, however, and the battle will now move into the federal courts. Democrat Robert Byrd of West Virginia savaged Packwood in a speech on the Senate floor and called on him to resign...
