...Woody, who? Nobody, really. The Allen persona - the urban boy-chik as social misfit - is, of course, an act, a put-on, no more the real performer than Chaplin's tramp or Jack Benny's miser. Still it does contain grains of truth, along with lecithin, gum arabic and .2% sodium benzoate to retard spoilage. Like all great comedians, Allen consumes his roots, and very often the public schleprechaun blurs into the private comic who would rather talk about anything but himself. As he admits, even his most outrageous gags are a form of autobiography, a reflection...
...liberal "socially-conscious" producer-director (with the occasional exception of New York outsiders like Kazan). He stayed in Hollywood for studio money and soundstages, and his films were among the few made there that dealt, on a large scale, with important contemporary subject matter: racial strife, American "success", the misfit problems of war veterans and motorcycle gangs. To make them, Kramer had to fight--and then compromise. He hoped to film the T.V. play, Judgment at Nuremberg, so he filled his cast with Names and touted the project to United Artists as its year's Grand Hotel...
...magazines. But the response of most liberal media has been at least as wrongheaded: journals such as Time (always the most reliable index of what mistakes the country's liberal center is making) have from the start portrayed Calley as a half-mad, sub-normal robot, a kill-crazed misfit who took out all the frustrations of a life of failure and rejection on the people of one South Vietnamese hamlet. News accounts have played up Calley's lack of command ability, his feelings of inferiority, the supposed unfitness of his whole platoon. The campaign to make Calley into stupid...
...Times Columnist John Hall revealed that at least three players have been "carrying guns and several others are known to have hidden knives-to use as protection in case of fights among themselves." Hall went on to report that several Angels openly considered ailing Outfielder Tony Conigliaro "a malingering misfit." Recently, they are said to have shown their contempt by laying Tony's uniform on a stretcher with a pair of crossed crutches and some sanitary napkins and then splattering everything with catsup. On another occasion, Hall wrote, some players deliberately tried to hit General Manager Dick Walsh (known...
...more and more rhinos appear. They are town citizens afflicted with rhinoceritis, a disease which not only makes them change into rhinos but actually makes them want to turn themselves into these strong, aggressive, and insensitive pachyderms. Only Berenger remains immune from this metamorphosis, for he is a special misfit, committed to nothing but pursuing his own harmless pleasures. At the end the whole world has gone over to the rhinos and he is left totally alone, musing on the sad fate of the nonconformist ("People who hang onto their individuality always come to a bad end"). Half-inclined...
