...ants in servitude to Hopper (voiced by Kevin Spacey) and his band of gangster grasshoppers, who fly in each year to receive their tribute of vittles. Hopper is a thug among bugs, and no ant dares stand up to him. But one little fellow, Flik (Dave Foley), a misfit with big ideas, decides to venture outside the colony and hire some tough guys to fight the grasshoppers. All right, the new hired guns are actually a troupe of circus performers with prima-donna dispositions and tender carapaces. But what Hopper doesn't know can't hurt the ants...

...going to tell you an old and familiar story," a character announces at the outset. "No tricks up our sleeve." Well, maybe a few tricks: the play transposes the Gospel to 1950s and '60s Texas, where the Jesus figure (called Joshua) is a misfit at Pontius Pilate High and has his first gay experience when Judas accosts him in the bathroom during the senior prom. This time out, it's Barnaby Gaitlin, who turns 30 during the course of this story without having acquired any noticeable trappings of success. ...father, a preacher, read from the book of Proverbs. In his heart, however, the 17-year-old was pondering the words of a classmate. "Don't be at prayer circle on Monday," Michael Carneal had told Strong on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Carneal was a bit of a misfit at Heath High School in West Paducah, Ky., one who occasionally wore ill-fitting, loud-colored clothes and had a couple of disciplinary problems (browsing the Playboy Website, digging a sharp object into a wall). But Carneal could also discuss the Shakespeare play assigned to class (Romeo and Juliet) with allusions...
