There is, of course, no way to know if the ad is real. It may have been a crass joke, or an attempt to embarrass final clubs by depicting a blatantly racist, classist, and misogynist member. Yet on email lists and around dinner tables, students wondered whether or not the ad was real. And, somewhat surprisingly, a near unanimity of 14 final club members, both male and female, with whom I spoke, said that they could imagine a Harvard senior writing the post in earnest...
...their friends in the display of ribald wit. They're joke jocks. And since they don't think girls are funny (their touchstone movie "classics" are Caddyshack and Porky's, not Earth Girls Are Easy and Clueless), and since the jokes they make often have a pretty deep misogynist streak, they play to the one audience they think will appreciate them: their male friends, which is to say, themselves. Caring about women’s issues doesn’t jibe with the ironically detached Harvard woman of today, who wants everyone to stop being all sensitive, so nobody gets angry—or worse, starts acting like some kind of feminist or something...
...challenger steadfastly in the middle (Webb served in Reagan's Administration, is a former Marine and takes a conservative line on immigration), Allen ran to Webb's left. One campaign commercial rattled off a series of Webb statements painting him as unfriendly to women's interests at best, a misogynist at worst. The ad's tagline? "Webb: Right for '06 ... 1806." Ham-fisted, corny and apparently unaware that there are plenty of Virginians who pine for the 19th century-Allen among them...
