...Globe theatre Rose Coghlan appeared in "Jocelyn." This celebrated actress fully sustained her reputation last evening, for her work was a marvel of force and power throughout the play. It is in dramatic situations that Miss Coghlan most excels, although in scenes of a lighter character, her fascinating manner shows to excellent advantage. The scene of the play is laid in the time of Louis XIII. of France, and is filled with exciting incidents. The climaxes are strong, especially at the end of the play, where Jocelyn, disguised as a man, avenges the deaths of her brothers by fighting...
...expect. The work of the museum company was equal, and the acting of no one in the cast was positively bad. Perhaps the most praise is due to Mr. Wilson, whose impersonation of the barrister Dick Pheny, though once or twice slightly coarse, leaves little to be desired. Miss O'Leary as Lavender, and Miss Sheridan as Minnie Gilfillian did good, faithful, and at many times charming work, Miss Sheridan showing perhaps more originality than Miss O'Leary. Mr. Booth's Horace Bream was well done, though the part is rather a disagreeable one. Next Monday will begin a short...
...spectra of several stars are being photographed at the observatory. The first of these spectra to be completed is that of Zeta Ursae Majoris. The spectrum of this star has been photographed at the observatory on seventy nights and a careful study of the results has been made by Miss A. C. Maury, a niece of Dr. Draper. The K line is clearly seen to be double in the photographs taken on March 29, 1887, on May 17, 1889, and on August 27 and 28, 1889. On many other dates the line appeared hazy as if the components were slightly...
Phyllis.Mrs. Burnett's comedy "Phyllis" began its last week at the Museum last evening. The scenes in which Miss O'Leary and Mr. Booth figure are very charming...
...realistic strength of some of the situations is great. "Jack Meredith," the central figure of the cast, was taken by Mr. J. H. Gilmour very creditably. His personality was strong, and his acting forceful. Mr. Russell Bassett made a hit as "Patrick Doolan," a British sailor. Miss Isabelle Evesson did the part of "Dorothy," Jack's sweetheart, in a very taking fashion. Her stage presence is good, and added much to the success which she scored by her acting alone...
