...present from skepticism. Missionaries do not find their greatest opponent in any national heathen religion but from the modern doubt to which young Japan is inclined. There is at present only one Christian in the country to every 500 unbelievers. It seems better to educate natives for mission work than to bring in foreign missionaries, although of course the latter are very useful. But natives can accomplish more, and schools for their instruction are important items in the progress of the country. The lack of books is very great. One theological seminary of about sixty students has only about seventy...
...Episcopal City Mission of Boston has requested the students of Harvard College to support the singing at the Sunday evening services in the Columbia Theatre. The matter was put in charge of the leader of the Glee Club, who showed energy enough to put a notice in the CRIMSON and to attend two of the services; no other Glee Club man has been in once. We have all known one or more who approach this son, but the perfect son has appeared but once...
...smaller cities of the west and all the cities of the south are ignored, If the object of these winter trips is to awaken an interest in Harvard in the sections of the country where little is known of the University - the clubs have certainly mistaken their mission if we are to judge from the circuit they take. Indianapolis, Omaha, Denver, Louisville, Nashville and Atlanta are never visited by the Harvard Clubs. Yale and Princeton go to these citins every four years and the result is seen in the numbers of students that flock to Yale and Princeton from these...
