...thundering 21-gun salute from an unseen man-o'-war rumbled in the fog off Barcelona harbor. Ancient Spanish cannon in the fort protecting the harbor bellowed their reply. Out of the mist loomed two U.S. cruisers and three destroyers. It was the U.S. Sixth Fleet's first operational visit in Franco's day, to Spain's well-sheltered Mediterranean ports. All told, 30 U.S. warships, including the 45,000-ton aircraft carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt, the carrier Tarawa (27,100 tons) and three heavy cruisers, steamed into eight Spanish ports last week...

...German dockworker peered through the drizzly fog that hung over the North Sea port of Bremerhaven last week and muttered: "Da kommen die Schweine [There come the swine]." Out of the mist lumbered two sharp-prowed, 6,500-ton icebreakers wearing huge Soviet flags on their sterns and the painted-over names"North-wind" and "Westwind" on their bows. ...prevent-an-explosion is the unexpected byproduct of research conducted by a pair of English chemists, W. G. Glendinning and A. M. MacLennan. Four years ago, the two scientists set out to compare the "explodability" of kerosene and gasoline vapors. When they first blew up test mixtures of kerosene mist, they discovered that the intricate process of combustion was much slower than they had expected. It took all of one-hundredth of a second for the expanding pressure of the explosion to rise one pound per square inch. That left "bags of time," they decided, to quench an accidental explosion...

...gleaming retriever sat quivering with expectancy as the shotguns shattered the stillness of the misty morning in Washington's rainswept Snoqualmie River valley. The first pheasant dropped behind the dog. The second, whirring off into the mist, wheeled at the shot and fell into the brush to one side. The third was brought down just across the river. Then the handler issued a sharp command: "Fetch...
