...colleges. The group's range and appeal to all ages are on full display on its latest CD, The Phat Pack (Immergent). The rapidly twisting unison and ensemble lines of Cut 'N Run are like a breakneck drive on a winding road--dangerous and exhilarating. On the title track, misterioso woodwind passages alternate with a soulful, pounding minor blues. The streak of humor in Goodwin's writing comes to the fore in wry nods to his TV and film composing, including the finger-snapping Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, complete with a scream and a splat...
...Musician of the Year, and with good reason. Her vocal and stylistic range is almost unfathomable: in the course of roughly 10 minutes at the end of the first act, she goes from airy coquettish high notes to the wistful, delicate "Goodbyes" to the passionate lament of the "misterioso" theme that haunts the entire opera. She pulls off coloratura singing--that ornamented style of singing with lots of extra notes, scales and vibrato thrown in for effect that is so easily botched by less capable and confident sopranos--remarkably well, jumping up and down the scale and throwing in lots...

It goes wussily misterioso when Quaid meets a Yodaesque guru. But even when the film flirts with becoming ordinary, it is propelled by the stolid charm of Schwarzenegger, who carries the whole movie as easily as a dumbbell between his fingers...
...conduct the full symphony. "I expect you to be as young as he is." A few measures later she is talking about one of the chorus' celebrated pianissimos. "Sopranos, listen to the tenors and just place the sparkling star gently above their sound. It should have a misterioso quality, just whisper. Shh, shh." Balancing a chorus of 170 is a tricky business, no less so when it turns to popular music. "This song has got to bounce, it's got to bubble!" she burst out last week during a rehearsal of The Night They Invented Champagne, from Gigi...
