...Dear Inspector moves on. The mystery, while definitely the secondary plot element, becomes more interesting. The film is certainly helped along by the presence of the achingly beautiful Catherine Alric, who dimwittedly plays the central figure in the unraveling story: as the mistress of at least two of the victims and one police inspector who is assigned to the case after Lise is temporarily taken off it. In the end, though, the mystery dissolves into silliness--save for one scene suffused with skillful tension in an abandoned factory housing both murder weapons, murderer and a body. ...Peter Sellers is bungling his way into Le Club Foot, a Paris disco frequented by dope dealers. Just then a blonde plunges out, struggling to escape a nasty-looking killer. She trips over Clouseau, which is lucky for him. She turns out to be Simone Le Gree, the former mistress-secretary of France's drug kingpin, who is out to get Clouseau. Since she is also out to get her boss, who has dropped her, she becomes the inspector's sexy sidekick in Revenge of the Pink Panther, the fifth entry in this continuing Sellers market of laughs...

...gifted singer to succeed the clown Will Kempe. The current Feste is Mark Lamos, who not only has a fine voice but also plucks his own theorbo in the charming songs composed by John Morris. Freedman has also given Feste four additional singers. In the setting of "O Mistress Mine," for instance, with its lovely upward leaps of sixths and sevenths, Lamos, sitting cross-legged on the kitchen table, starts by himself, is joined by two men and then two women, and the song is finally done as a canon. Redgrave would do well to cut down somewhat on all the donning and doffing and crumpling of her tricorne. Freedman has involved her in one inspired bit of innovative staging: during the singing of "O Mistress Mine" Orsino and Olivia appear in the opposing balconies, each meditatively gazing up into the night sky; Viola silently enters below, and, while listening, looks up at first one and then the other. We thus have a visual triangle to underline the love triangle in which the three characters are involved...
