Director Chris Arnold has several advantages in putting On the Town on the stage: a number of good voices and as many good actors, including some surprisingly competent bit players. He has an an imaginative and ambitious choreographer in Chet D'Elia, and in Judy Friedlander a costume mistress who evokes early Forties styles exceedingly well. But there are also disabilities. For one thing, the stage is not much larger than a hopscotch square, and it shows up any amateur faults in the show's drive for professional slickness...
Melted Ears. Decameron (Ron) Grant, 36, is a playwright with the genius of an O'Neill and the sexual insatiability of a Sukarno. He is strictly a four-letter man, and he has manhood problems and a domineering mistress-an older woman who with her husband nurtured the young playwright's talents in his more golden days. To rediscover himself, Grant heads for the Caribbean to go skindiving. In addition to a shark or two, he spears beautiful Lucky Videndi, and as he tries to work out a modus vivendi with her, he alternates between ocean...
Macabre Medley. On trial at Chester last April were Ian Brady, 28, a misanthropic store clerk whose only previous offenses had been housebreaking and burying cats alive, and Brady's blonde mistress, Esther Myra Hindley, 23, a wheyfaced, bouffant stenotypist. They were charged with slowly killing a ten-year-old girl and two boys, twelve and 17, by suffocation and ax blows, among other means. Two of the victims were buried naked in the bleak Manchester moors, where Myra posed smiling over the graves for Brady's camera; the third corpse was found by police in Brady...

...best of all on opening night was Nick Whitlam as the head Vestal, a booming games mistress who almost, but not quite, succeeds in establishing military discipline over her violent sexual frustrations. With a technique born of fastidious hard-sell he leads the chorus through the show's finest numbers, You're Only A Virgin Once and the kick line, Love Me, Love My Cult. Here, Steve Kaplan's lyrics, by the by, are all things wonderful, and one forgives and forgets his occasional carelessness in other parts of the production...
