Jefferson's mistress, Kennedy's indiscretions, Nixon's contempt for the law-is there no end to the exposes about the failings of U.S. Presidents? Apparently not, for now we hear that George Washington was absolutely awful at spelling, grammar and punctuation. Some samples from his writing: "I passed the time . . . much more agree-abler than what I imagined I should" and "went ahunting . . . and catched a fox." Among his misspellings: expedate, ingaged, turkie, burrying and bairskin...
...first act moved fast. Intermission backstage involved more balloon-blowing, song-humming and cleaning up. People were grimy from rolling on the floor and squeezing pears and bananas. Elizabeth Genovese played the theme from "Love Story" on a dusty grand piano. The costume mistress lugged five popcorn costumes--27 pounds worth of shredded foam rubber. Fields' will, which left his mistress $25,000, two bottles of perfume, a Cadillac and a dictionary...

It is a hard scuffle, but Nicholas dotes on the comfortable insecurity of the life. At least it offers a neat opportunity to fend off deeper involvement with his mistress Peggy (Françoise Fabian) and keeps an eventual reconciliation with his wife (Carla Gravina) at a safe distance. Nicholas' only deep commitment is to the dubious luxury of noninvolvement...
Naipaul's vision is different from Roche's because it does not legitimize imperialism or attempt to uphold this fragile mess of relations. By the end of the novel Roche's hopeless and fragile position has made him an unwitting accomplice in the murder of his mistress, and his revolutionary opponent is simply a personal opponent. Just because he reduces his paragons of imperialist and guerrilla to such an individualistic level, Naipaul does not dismiss the issue of imperialism. Imperialism has much more subtle effects, Naipaul indicates, than building slums and mansions and creating racist distinctions. Imperialism twists social relations...
