...White House and the Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, now publicly talk about temporal goals. Last week al-Maliki even declared a preference for Obama's 16-month redeployment plan - though his spokesman subsequently issued a vague, none-too-convincing clarification stating that the Prime Minister had been misunderstood. In response to al-Maliki's controversial statement to the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel, McCain's campaign did its best to salvage the situation, declaring that these new discussions about withdrawal were in fact a victory for McCain's strategy, not a sign of weakness - or worse, an endorsement...

...think the worst thing to do is to make it easy. You need to be fighting for that idea as opposed to just having it accepted. That process of being misunderstood helps you figure out how to communicate it in a way that other people can hear. And you need the passion to follow the idea up. So the last thing I'd want to do is build an enterprise that just made it easy to have ideas. It needs that friction, but not so much that it gets smothered...
