Fire Down Below. Scriptwriter Irwin Shaw concocts a fast-paced yarn of the Caribbean, punctuates it with lust, betrayal and revenge; with Robert Mitchum, Rita Hayworth, Jack Lemmon (TIME, July...
...Robert Mitchum and Deborah Kerr in virtually the only two roles give very competent performances; this is a particular accomplishment for Mitchum. His Mr. Allison is a "big dumb guy," whose blunt confidence in his powers is tempered by unexpected flashes of real insight. Deborah Kerr plays Sister Anglea with naivete and a brouge, but without cruelty. Both could have been unmerciful satires of arch-type young nuns and dirty Marines; but Houston has made them happily sympathetic figures, and not pressed indelicate comparison...

But Deborah is dramatically startled to see him. "Naow, le's jus' take it easy, ma'am," says Mitchum...
Anyway, pretty soon they are doing the things movie actors always do on desert islands. Mitchum is snagging coconuts and noosing turtles; Deborah is roasting breadfruit and thatching a sail. Everything is terribly homey-but. "I never thought there were pretty nuns," Mitchum says, all of a sudden. She puts on a prim expression. "Well," says Mitchum defensively, getting his mind back on the track, "I got the corps like you got the church...
