Harvards houses are uniquely positioned to play the role of social mixer and equalizer on this campus. Students from a remarkable diversity of backgrounds live in close contact with one another. They share a library, a dining hall, and common spaces. Why then is it that Harvard allows its student body to segregate itself into small, insular groups even before arriving in its Houses? Upperclassmen have no reason or incentive to venture out of their blocking groups to interact with their Housemates and, as a consequence, few do. Last Thursday’s Kite and Key booze cruise was not exactly a scene from Girls Gone Wild. Sorority girls, cash bar, beautiful views of the Boston Harbor, and yet no wet t-shirt contest. Instead, the annual Kappa Kappa Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta mixer (that’s a lot of Kappas!) and cruise around Boston harbor once again came to an early end. Last year, a Theta girl got a little too friendly with the bottle and needed medical attention. This year, it was a certain young gentleman (a Theta escort) who spewed five times. [Sigh...
...Harvard Idol for the entire first-year class. But when students and prefects have tried to finagle extra funding—by pursuing small Undergraduate Council grants—for special first-year events, they have run into multiple bureaucratic barriers. Last year’s hugely successful Weld mixer and end-of-year South Yard study break were fully funded by the council, but only after students, prefects and a few dedicated council representatives submitted repeated grant applications. We hope and expect that the increase in funding to the Prefect Program will encourage more events like these to occur...
