...Berlin's suburb of Dahlem, two years ago last week, the Gestapo (secret police) arrested Rev. Martin Niemoller, onetime U-boat commander, took him to Moabit prison. Pastor Niemoller was no Marxist, no pacifist, no libertarian. He had, indeed, been an early supporter of Naziism, and the .bourgeoisie and old army families who made up his congregation accepted, broadly, a Nazi view of "the Jewish problem." But for Martin Niemoller, Naziism could go just so far. When "German Christians" sought to Nazify the Evangelical Church, when the Reich sought to apply the "Leader Principle" to church government...
...Berlin was begun a great "treason trial," whose size and scope was an embarrassment to the Nazis themselves. Out of the yard of Berlin's grim Moabit Prison rolled a green police van one morning last week. Through Berlin's streets it rumbled, finally pulled up in the well-kept grounds of the dread People's Court building on the Bellevuestrasse. Three prisoners-Ernst Niekisch, Dr. William Drexler and Karl Troegler-emerged from the van and were hustled into the great hall of the Court. On the bench sat their judges-three red-robed justices, a police...
While his country's national tennis tournament went on without him, Germany's No. 1 Ace Baron Gottfried von Cramm stood trial for homosexuality. Testimony was taken in Berlin's gloomy old Moabit Court behind doors closed to press and public. Presumably to quash rumors of the trial's being a political persecution, both press' and public were admitted last day when the presiding judge had his final say. In a frank review of a sordid case, the judge found von Cramm guilty of immorality with an 18-year-old Galician Jew named Manasse Herbst...
...Church, and in Berlin most churchmen agree today that but for Niemoller most of the opposition to Hitler within the Lutheran fold would probably have been beaten down. Seven months ago the Gestapo (Secret Police), who had searched Pastor Niemoller's home repeatedly, finally clapped him into Moabit Prison on the triply seditious charge of ''misuse of the pulpit to vilify the State and the Party and attack the authority of the Government." The longer he has languished in jail the more of a Church hero indomitable Martin Niemoller has become, and as his trial began last...
...Communist pamphlets. Last July New York City Communists rioted onto the German liner Bremen in protest against Simpson's jailing, while his father mournfully asserted that Son Lawrence was no Communist. Last fortnight the Ministry of Justice transferred Seaman Simpson from camp to Berlin's famed Moabit Prison, changed the charge against him to trying to smuggle marks out of Germany, announced that he will go on secret trial before the so-called People's Court next week...
