...blood-splattered sedan through his assailants' vehicles and outlast them in a long chase. "It was real James Bond stuff," says Smith, 49. And that wasn't even his worst day. Two years later, he and 1,000 other HSBC employees were trapped in their offices by a mob that tried to burn down the building during another of the country's economic crises...
Sharon had always opposed the Oslo peace agreements, arguing that Arafat would just use self-rule to wage war against Israel from up close. As a Palestinian mob lynched two Israeli soldiers on camera, as Palestinian marksmen shot into Israeli houses, Sharon's view came to be accepted by a growing number of his compatriots, propelling him to power in 2001. The scripts neatly balance satire and sincerity: while the show's outlandish twists challenge Daniel's faith--he's like Job, if Job lived on Melrose Place--they never mock...
...rivals, and one white participant, Peggy Terry, admitted being raised in a Kentucky Klan family. After moving to Montgomery during the bus boycott, she had gone once on a lark to see "that smart aleck nigger come out of jail," and the actual sight of King buffeted by a mob had angered her. Now Terry kept a few black friends in the Jobs Or Income Now group from uptown Chicago's poor white district, and she wowed movement crowds by asking where else a hillbilly housewife could trade ideas or jail cells with a Nobel prizewinner...
