...board the huge bucket that would carry them down to the bottom of the mine shaft, two miles below the surface. The scene: the No. 2 shaft of the Western Deep Levels gold mine in Carletonville, about 50 miles west of Johannesburg. Suddenly rioting broke out. A swelling mob of African mine workers, angered by a chronic wage and job dispute, went rampaging through the pit area, stoning white officials, looting and setting fire to buildings...
...characterization make it worth watching. It's a subdued 1940's version of Easy Rider (the lonely outcast line et. al.). Montgomery Cliff is superb, and one could almost learn to like Frank Sinatra from this flick. By the way, this is the role that Sinatra got due to mob pressure when his career was at its low point. Illustrated with some precise, previously unpublished photographs, the book convincingly dispels initial claims by Guardsmen that their lives were endangered by an onrushing mob of students, that they were encircled and had run out of tear gas, and that they had come under fire from an unknown sniper. ...suspenseful nor novel enough in its action sequences to make it as an adventure film, Crude is also not funny enough to make it as a comedy. Director Kramer and Writer Norman attempt to jerk it to life with sadism (Dunaway beaten almost to death by Palance's mob), vulgarity (Scott urinating on Palance's boots during one of their confrontations) and an excess of bawdy language. But the prissy and self-consciously liberal Kramer seems, in this attempt at lustiness, rather like a college chaplain deliberately swearing in order to seem like one of the boys...
