...Democracy means the people rule. The ancient Greeks invented it, but they were very skeptical about it. Plato thought it far too unruly. Equality was dangerous, he said. If everyone is equal to everyone else, there is no order. To Plato, democracy was mob rule. If he were around and looking at Palm Beach County, he'd be saying, I told...
...issues. We must be willing to confront the difficult ones. Say that Ariel Sharon's visit to the Temple Mount is directly responsible for the recent outbreak of violence. Say that Israel has the right to use all powers at its disposal to defend its soldiers and citizens against mob violence. Say you support a Palestinian state. Say you oppose any kind of Palestinian sovereignty in Jerusalem. But don't say that you don't want to talk about it. Those whose lives are in the balance deserve more than that...
...rallies. The HSI rally made two claims: one humanitarian and one political. The humanitarian claim was that we mourn the loss of all life in the Middle East--Israeli and Palestinian--and hope and pray for a just and lasting peace in the region. "Imagine if Arabs had attacked the house of a Jewish member of parliament," says Bishara. "They would have shot them. At my house, the police were just trying...
That's not true. They deliberately tried to shape themselves as the underdog, when in fact they are deliberately launching these attacks in order to draw attention through the pictures, the shocking pictures. We were shocked not just by the pictures of our soldiers lynched by the mob but also by pictures of the young Palestinian who lost his life when he was caught in crossfire. But, as leaders, we should see through the screens and ask ourselves who is responsible for it, how it happened, who initiated it, for what purpose. What the hell kind of purpose could...
