Once again, the Mob's former desert stopover is on the remake. This joint once prospered as a venue for naughty, even dangerous diversion. Then in the 1980s, Las Vegas tried to go mainstream, transforming itself into a desert Disneyland--the Rat Pack gone to the rug rats. Up went casino hotels with exploding volcanoes, battling galleons and amusement parks. Alas, the folks who showed up with their kids had the audacity to spend time with them instead of gambling away the college funds. The casinos compounded their marketing error by offering cheap rooms and cheaper food...

...raped and nearly killed a nun in a New York City convent in 1981, resolving what then-mayor Ed Koch called "the most heinous crime in the history of New York City." The movie includes this event, as well as Dietl's friendly relations with members of the mob and his problems with the police station hierarchy. It looks like screenplay writer Jeremy Iacone, however, relied on more than the book for inspiration. ...must be fair and say that Catatonia still has that kick that so many American groups have lost these days: they make happy-making music. They sing "I put horse's heads in people's beds/Cause I am the mob" with perfect bubbliness. Mulder and Scully, Road Rage and Johnny Come Lately are just plain fun and catchy. Don't Need the Sunshine is, for lack of a better description, nicely undemanding. It's definitely sing-along material. Other songs are just forgettable...

...Akroyd, Anne Bancroft, Sylvester Stalone and Jennifer Lopez among others), takes some of the edge off the hackneyed plot, Antz fails to fully engage. If computer animation was begging for something with epic, imperialistic proportions, where the miracle of 3-D animation could be unleashed onto big battle and mob scenes, it got it. Plotwise however, Antz is virtually indistinguishable from the recent Mulan and earlier Aladdin. Having Woody Allen's trademark quips and Sylvester Stallone's kindhearted brawn in place of accustomedmediocre musical numbers makes Antzdifferent from its Disney predecessors, but notdifferent enough...
