Fingering a 105-year-old rosary that "once belonged to my grandmother," the defendant wept while his lawyer summed up before U.S. District Judge Peirson Hall in Los Angeles. "Oh, thank you, your honor!" cried old Movie Mobster George Raft, 70, as the judge fined him a mere $2,500 on one count of filing a false income tax return but dismissed five other charges amounting to $50,000 in back taxes-and a possible $25,000 in fines and 15 years in prison. But mostly the novel is a stream of unpunctuated non sequiturs, in which coherence seems inadvertent and in which Burroughs' scatological and pornographic effects no longer seem to shock...
Mistaken Murder. Valachi quickly kissed Genovese back "to let him know I was smart and I would answer him in the same style-kill him too." Valachi was so frightened he asked prison guards to put him in solitary confinement. But as soon as he got out, Mafia Mobster John Dioguardia (Johnny Dio), who was in charge of the prison shower room, invited Valachi in to take a shower. Valachi, convinced he would be murdered there, refused. Panicky, he tried to "stay out of crowds" in the prison yard, finally grabbed a length of iron pipe lying conveniently...
