What works better is the idea that Ivan is not only mesmerized by such mock-heroic displays, but much influenced and shaped by them. Throughout the film, he is ground down and exploited. His fantasy of breaking out of his grim world by becoming a celebrity is exploded when the music producer, who controls distribution of nearly all records on the island, offers him $20 for his song-take it or leave it. Too proud at first...
Even funnier is Ohrberg's "Outhouse Car." A privy on wheels, "The Outhouse Car" has an honest-to-goodness back home outhouse roof. A half-moon back window and a roll of toilet paper between the seats add to the work's mock authenticity. The exterior, almost entirely knotted pine, completes Ohrberg's Pop art statement...

Most of the cast can't match him, and only intermittently--in the fatuous joy of Norman Ornellas as the doomed and "sweating lord" of Hastings, for example--does the play rise to its full height and mock the dead bones that lie scatt'red by. Penelope Allen and Pacino offer another such moment in the scene where he woos her before her murdered husband's bier; except for Clarence's dream. Richard III's poetry doesn't sing of its own accord like the later plays', but Allen's almost lilting threnody...
