...Mozart Requiem, Karajan opted convincingly for a large symphonic approach, sweeping the music along with crisp rhythms and an ingenious succession of tempos. Bruckner's Te Deum has a peculiarly spare, even austere ring; Karajan caught that quality by the simple expedient of exposing all its modal harmonies and laying out its violent cross-rhythms firmly and precisely. Best of all perhaps was the Beethoven Ninth. This was one of those uncommon moments in which the strictest adherence to the letter of the score had a liberating effect. Rarely has the scherzo been taken at such a whirlwind pace...

...course, Carter (Cot-tuh? Car-tuh?) simply does not use the "good ole boy" phraseology; his speech is far too aristocratic for that. Even in casual conversation, he is not likely to fall into what linguists call the double modal-"might could" or "might ought." Nor can he be expected to employ another familiar Deep South form, the perfective done, as in "he done did it." Between now and November, moreover, his audiences are not apt to hear him describe his opponent, as some Plains folk might, as "a sorry piece of plunder" or threaten to "knock the bark...

...culturally hip American or European what ongaku means, and he will reply that it is the Japanese word for music. He will no doubt be thinking of the silken flutter of the 13-stringed koto or the modal mysteries of the pentatonic scale. It is estimated that visitors to the SMSA will have an arrival pattern to the facility of 73 per cent by automobile, 10 per cent by public transportation, 15 per cent...

Three centuries of tonality have led the modern listener to expect certain familiar kinds of progressive harmonies, but masses and motets written in the old church modes presuppose a different set of expectations. Just as the modal fabric of Renaissance music is foreign to the twentieth century ear, the context of modern music--a permanent background of muzak in supermarkets, television soundtracks and the stereo next door--bears no resemblance to the silence that Byrd and Gesualdo labored to fill. There are no grand gestures in this music, nothing simple for the listener or the performer to grab onto...
